For many University of Kentucky students, the right undergraduate degree is an important stepping stone towards a life-long goal of pursuing medicine, dentistry, or law. The College of Arts and Sciences works hard to develop programs and majors that help cater to the pre-professional goals of its many students.

This past July, a group of eight female student athletes traveled to Ethiopia as part of a week long service trip. It was the second consecutive year that the UK Athletics Department has led such a group. Jeramiah Smith is a professor and researcher in the Department of Biology. Smith's research focuses on gene rearragnement, with a specific focus on the genes of Lamprey, a species of aquatic vertebrate. Allan Butterfield is UK's Alumni Association Endowed Professor of Biological Chemistry at UK, and the Director of the Center for Membrane Sciences.

The focus of his research is the study of oxidative stress on the brain, one of the main components of Alzheimer's Disease.
