Ribble Overview

Mentors: Mentors are any Biology faculty member willing and able to oversee a student during the summer. A list of potential mentors and projects can be found here. Students will be encouraged to check with potential mentors before applying, as the willingness of a faculty member to be a mentor will be a factor in evaluating the applications.

Commitment and goals: Interns are expected to devote full-time to research. The details of timing will depend on the project and mentor, but may often include unusual hours and activity 6 days out of the week. Prospective interns should check with their potential mentors regarding expectations. The two existing summer programs, NSF-SEIS and KBRIN, run from late May or early June to early August. Ribble interns are strongly encouraged to participate in these programs, but could start their research earlier in May or continue on later in August. A minimum expectation is that the intern will devote the equivalent of at least 10 full-time weeks to doing research.

Both summer programs have additional activities in the evenings and on weekends, and Ribble interns are strongly encouraged to participate in these. Both also have opportunities to present aspects of the intern's research to others.

We have high ambitions for Ribble Interns. We encourage interns to continue working on their research projects after the summer, to present them publicly at events such as the Undergraduate Research Showcase, Posters-at-the Capital, the annual meeting of the Kentucky Academy of Sciences, or possibly at national society meetings. We hope that the research project done by each Ribble Intern is of sufficient scope to be part of a manuscript published in a scientific journal. Mentors of Ribble Interns are encouraged to support these goals as much as possible.

Stipend: Ribble interns will earn $5000/summer. The interns are encouraged to live on campus with the interns from the other two programs. If so, your room charge will be covered by the Ribble fund.
